The Cairo Custom House was built in 1872 and housed a post office and a facility that once collected tariffs on imports travelling up the Mississippi River. The building now houses a museum with several unique historical items and many interesting displays. See a U.S.S. Cairo gunboat replica and American Civil War memorabilia, including a desk used by Ulysses S. Grant when he was in Cairo during the war. The U.S. Customs House is also one of nine Great River Road Interpretive Centers along the byway in Illinois.
