The Old Market House, a brick, Greek revival building, was the focal point of community life when Galena was a thriving river port and lead mining boomtown. It served as the city market for almost 65 years as well as the seat of Galena Government. When it opened, the first floor was filled with 12 stalls that could be rented by vendors for $50 a year. It is one of few remaining market buildings built in the pre-Civil War era. Today the Old Market House contains exhibits on Galena’s history and the Galena Welcome Center, which is the perfect place to plan your visit to Galena.
