Miles Dewey Davis III was born in Alton on May 26, 1926. Created by the talented sculptor and life-time Davis fan, Preston Jackson, a bronze statue of Miles Davis stands in the middle of the Miles Davis Memorial Plaza. The only statue of Miles Davis in the United States, it features the jazz great lost in song with his trumpet.
