Dowling House

Built in 1826, Dowling House is the oldest house in Galena. The limestone building was once Galena’s only trading post and contained primitive living quarters that hosted many fur traders. Today, a tour of Dowling House gives a glimpse into the history of Galena, when it was the lead mining capital of the world, a major commercial port on the upper Mississippi, and the wealthiest city in Illinois.
