Built between 1839 and 1841, the Carthage Jail is known as the site where Joseph Smith Jr., leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and his brother Hyrum were killed. The restored jail features 30-minute tours that teach about Joseph and Hyrum’s last days, along with the stories of two Elders who survived the attack. There is also a memorial statue to Joseph and Hyrum Smith.
